What happened

Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin hosted a press conference in Detroit, in the Department of Homeland Security’s upload of the August 31, 2026 event, to make a series of announcements on what the department called the administration’s unprecedented, interagency effort to crack down on fraud in the trucking industry.

Duffy framed the event, as he stated it, as part of the White House task force to eliminate fraud — a whole-of-government effort joining the Department of Transportation, law enforcement through the Department of Homeland Security, and U.S. attorneys for prosecutions — and introduced FMCSA Administrator Derek Barrs, whom Duffy credited with leading the charge at DOT to root out fraud and bring safety back to the roadways, and Andrew Ferguson, vice chair of the White House fraud task force, alongside Mullin. The officials’ closing case, as Mullin and Duffy stated it, was that qualified, lawful drivers are a safety issue for every American family on the road — in Mullin’s words at the close, a non-political one: America deserves safe roads and well-qualified drivers on them.

Why it matters

The Detroit press conference is the fraud task force operating across cabinet lines: DHS enforcement and DOT’s motor-carrier regulator announcing together, with prosecutors in the room — the same trucking-fraud and CDL-integrity campaign Duffy runs on the Transportation side, here presented as one interagency case with the Homeland Security secretary beside him.
