What happened

Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy and FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford were at Newark Liberty International Airport for the installation of a new surface movement radar (SMR), according to the Department of Transportation’s description of the August 11, 2026 event, which the department published under the title “Modern Skies for America.” Surface movement radar tracks aircraft and vehicles on the airport’s ground surface — the runway and taxiway environment where the modernization program is replacing decades-old equipment.

Why it matters

Newark is the airport whose spring 2025 radar and communications outages Secretary Duffy has repeatedly cited in making the modernization case — including in his April 22, 2026 Modern Skies Summit remarks, paged separately on this site. An installation event there is the build made visible at the site of the failure that helped launch it: a named piece of new equipment, installed at a named airport, under the Modern Skies program.
