What happened
President Donald Trump signed an executive order at the White House on August 3, 2026, establishing what he called “the first ever presidential military spouse commission.” “Thank you all for being here as we take a major new step to support our incredible military family,” he said. “Something that we’ve been working on for a long time. I guess you could say for decades. There’s never been anything like this.”
The commission will be chaired by Jennifer Hegseth, wife of Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, both of whom were present; the President congratulated its new executive director, Desiree Thompson Sale, and new commission member Christy Mullin, wife of Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin, and said the commission will also include the spouses of the service secretaries, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and their senior enlisted leaders. Its charge, as he described it: recommendations on “housing, employment, health care, education, child care, and just about everything else” affecting military spouses. He placed the order inside the administration’s broader military-family record, citing the hundreds of millions of dollars for military child care and base housing in “the great big beautiful bill” and the $1,776 “warrior dividend” paid to every service member the previous Christmas. The long signing session ranged further, including the administration’s work on a bipartisan college-sports framework, before the President closed by thanking the room.
Why it matters
This signing is the founding document of the Military Spouse Commission whose first meeting this chronicle paged on October 19, 2026 — the body through which the administration’s military-family agenda (housing, spouse employment, child care) now formally runs. The commission’s membership is drawn from the spouses of the defense leadership itself, which makes its recommendations a direct line into the Pentagon’s family policy.
