Signature issue: Warrior culture — lethality, meritocracy, warfighting, accountability and readiness

Scoreboard tally

Wins, pending items, and setbacks on this profile are tallied from published scoreboard entries — never set by hand. The tally begins with the first reviewed weekly entry that scores this official.

Role status — October 2026: Hegseth is the incumbent Secretary of Defense, confirmed January 24, 2025 (51–50) and sworn in January 25, 2025 by Vice President Vance, according to the department’s own news account. The department now publishes as the “U.S. Department of War” at war.gov, and he is styled “Secretary of War” in 2026 speeches; the legal title remains Secretary of Defense, and one secondary source dates the secondary “Secretary of War” styling from September 2025.

At his confirmation, as quoted by the department, President Trump’s charge to him was “to bring the warrior culture back,” with the Pentagon “laser-focused on lethality, meritocracy, warfighting, accountability and readiness.” He remains an active public presenter of that program in October 2026 — department video shows him on an oath-of-enlistment “Send Me Tour” stop at the University of Tennessee on October 17, 2026, following a set-piece September 30, 2026 “State of the Force” speech — and he has defended the proposed $1.5T military budget in October 2026.

His tenure has also drawn attributed criticism: reporting on his May 23, 2025 post as @SecDef described him cracking down on reporters covering the Pentagon, citing national security. At the September 5, 2025 Department of War executive-order signing, he updated his official X handle to @SecWar (InsideDefense), and his official posts since — including an October 2, 2026 military-wide voting stand-down video — run under @SecWar; a February 27, 2026 court-filing excerpt also cites the @SecWar handle.

Video sources: LOUD. The Department of War YouTube channel posts Hegseth near-daily — tour stops, speeches, and official events — supplemented by White House and C-SPAN coverage of Pentagon briefings and set-piece addresses.

Why he matters to this chronicle: Hegseth is the public face of the administration’s military program and of its most visible institutional rebrand: the Defense-to-War renaming runs through his title, his department’s domain, and its social accounts. His scoreboard items — the budget fight, readiness and personnel policy, and press-access disputes — sit at the center of the Foreign Policy & Defense category.
