What happened
President Donald Trump announced action “to get illegal alien truck drivers off the American roadways” at the White House on July 30, 2026, “and replace them with proud American veterans.” He was joined by Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins, and Acting Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling, along with Werner Enterprises’ Nathan Meisgeier and representatives of the American Trucking Associations and the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, whom the President said were “behind this 100%.”
The President cited fatal crashes he attributed to non-citizen drivers holding state-issued commercial licenses, including an August crash in Florida in which, he said, three people were killed by a driver from India making an unlawful U-turn, and the recent killing of a Pennsylvania state trooper by a driver from Haiti. Secretary Duffy directed carriers and veterans to the program’s site, freedomhaulers.gov, “to find how do I hire more veterans,” framing the initiative as clearing the deck for veterans to take trucking jobs.
Why it matters
Freedom Haulers joins two files this chronicle tracks — commercial-driver licensing enforcement at Transportation and Labor, and veteran employment at the VA — into a single named initiative with its own public portal. It is the trucking counterpart to the administration’s broader CDL-enforcement record.
Scoreboard watch
This is a candidate item for the weekly scoreboard: a named initiative announced with three cabinet officers present. What the scoreboard will follow is the program’s published terms at freedomhaulers.gov, any DOL/DOT guidance that follows, and veteran hiring reported under it.
