What happened
President Donald Trump hosted a showcase at the White House on July 13, 2026 for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, the IndyCar race planned for Washington, D.C. as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations. “This will be like no other race ever,” the President said. “It’ll be one of the most unforgettable racing events the world has ever seen.” The race is scheduled for August 22 and 23, “right here in our nation’s capital,” with cars, he said, “racing more than 190 mph and even higher than that down Pennsylvania Avenue” and around the National Mall.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, whom the President credited with building the event with the racing figures present, attended, as did Roger Penske — the President noted he had awarded Penske the Presidential Medal of Freedom — Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks, General Motors president Mark Reuss, and IndyCar drivers Alex Palou, Felix Rosenqvist, and David Malukas. The event closed with a live pit-stop demonstration: a Team Penske crew changed four tires and fueled a car, a display Penske’s team said took about 6.5 seconds, in a preview of the race 41 days out.
Why it matters
The Freedom 250 is the administration’s America 250 celebration staged as a sporting spectacle in the capital itself — a street race around the National Mall produced with the Transportation Department. This chronicle files the dated preview here, with the race weekend of August 22–23 as the checkable follow-through.
