What happened

President Donald Trump hosted champion athletes and members of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition in the Oval Office on May 5, 2026. “Today I sign a proclamation recognizing national youth sports and fitness, and I’ll also sign the very first copy of the new revitalized presidential fitness test award — a certificate in recognition of achievement of the gold standard of physical fitness,” he said, crediting council member Bryson DeChambeau with championing the revival.

Secretaries Pete Hegseth, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Scott Turner, and Linda McMahon attended. Hegseth spoke to carrying fitness standards into education, recalling the Presidential Physical Fitness Award as “the pinnacle event” of his elementary-school years: “We should be in shape. We should compete, and there’s winners and there’s losers — we need to infuse that into our young people.”

Why it matters

The proclamation restores a fixture of American school life — the Presidential Fitness Test — as administration policy, with the War, Health, Housing, and Education secretaries jointly at the table. The signing anchors the Education hub’s record of the fitness revival.
