What happened
Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced the semi-finalists — the 15 stage-one winners — of the Department of Transportation’s Ideas Challenge, in the department’s December 10, 2025 upload of the challenge boot camp. The challenge is run by ARPA-I, the department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency for Infrastructure, which the event’s host described as bringing the high-risk, high-reward research model pioneered by DARPA to transportation. More than 400 submissions were received, as Secretary Duffy stated the number. Each stage-one team receives a $20,000 prize award — $300,000 in stage one in total — and the stage-one winners become eligible to compete in stage two for prizes totaling $700,000, for $1 million in prizes across the two stages, as the program was described at the event.
Duffy framed the challenge around the problems innovation is meant to solve at the department: drones and autonomous vehicles changing how people and products move, eVTOL air taxis, the more than 40,000 Americans lost on the roads each year, the cost of infrastructure, and navigation systems that adversaries cannot hack, as he listed them. He invoked the Wright brothers — a week shy of 122 years from their first flight, as he noted — as the persistence the challenge is meant to reward.
Why it matters
The Ideas Challenge is the department’s attempt to import the DARPA model into transportation: small public prizes, private-sector mentoring at the boot camp, and a pipeline for outside inventors to reach the department’s hardest problems — safety, cost, and navigation resilience — rather than leaving research to the department’s own programs.
