What happened

Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy joined Amtrak President Roger Harris for the official launch of the NextGen Acela at Union Station in Washington, in the Department of Transportation’s August 27, 2025 upload, and to discuss the administration’s actions to make Union Station a world-class transit hub, as the department’s description states the occasion. Amtrak’s board chair opened the event by declaring the start of, as he put it, Amtrak 2.0: the biggest investment in rolling stock in 25 years, as he stated it, with over 34 million people expected to ride Amtrak that year and revenue of nearly $4 billion — both records — and goals of 40 million passengers by 2030 and an operational break-even by 2028, as he stated the targets.

Speakers credited the train program’s supply chain as they stated its figures: parts produced across 29 states, 15,000 jobs generated by the investment, and 95 percent of the trains’ components made in America. Duffy, introduced as the conductor of the national movement system, framed the launch in the President’s terms as he stated them: Union Station beautiful again, transit safe again, and the nation’s capital great again — and he contrasted the aging Acela he had ridden many times with the new trains, which he described as beautiful and faster.

Why it matters

The NextGen Acela launch is the showcase day of Duffy’s rail agenda — new American-built high-speed trains entering service on the Northeast Corridor, the corridor that carries, as a speaker stated at the event, a fifth of the nation’s GDP — paired the same day with the Union Station reclaim and the Penn Station takeover paged separately on this site: equipment, stations, and management presented as one program.
