What happened

Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy held a press conference with the FAA’s acting administrator, in the Department of Transportation’s June 12, 2025 upload, to give an update on Newark Airport and its telecom issues and to discuss the One Big Beautiful Bill’s air traffic control modernization, as Duffy stated the agenda. The briefing opened with the day’s Air India Flight 171 crash: Duffy said the department’s and the FAA’s hearts went out to the victims’ families, that safety always comes first and the investigation would follow the facts, and that FAA and NTSB teams — with GE and Boeing resources — were deploying to India, which leads the investigation, with the United States there to assist, as he stated the arrangement. The acting administrator added that he had spoken with India’s director general of aviation that day and offered full support, as he stated it.

The Newark portion of the briefing continued the spring’s repair sequence paged on this site — the runway reopening of June 2 and the telecom line work between the Philadelphia TRACON and the New York facility — under the funding frame the department repeated all summer: modernization carried in the One Big Beautiful Bill, as the speakers discussed it.

Why it matters

The June 12 briefing is the Newark story at its midpoint — after the runway reopened early and while the telecom fix was still being tested — and it records the department’s crash-response discipline on a day when the news was not its own: condolences, investigators deployed, and the host country stated to lead.
