What happened

Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy delivered remarks at the Great American Road Trip Expo, in the Department of Transportation’s upload of the event, welcoming vendors, food companies, and manufacturers to what he called the first annual expo — to be repeated year over year, as he stated it. The vehicles on display, he said, were all American-made and built by American workforces.

Duffy framed the expo as the department’s answer to the President’s America 250 tasking: the President, he said, has tasked every department to celebrate the country’s 250th birthday, and the Department of Transportation’s celebration is the Great American Road Trip — there is nothing more Americana than a road trip, as he put it, and to love America is to see America. He pointed to gas prices and inflation down and American spirits up as the moment for it, as he stated the conditions, and recalled his own family’s road trips as the kind of memory the campaign is meant to make. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation’s president and CEO followed him, noting the industry supports nearly 10 million people who make their living in automaking and affiliated businesses, as he stated the figure.

Why it matters

The expo is the public launch of the department’s America 250 program: the semiquincentennial assigned to the department whose network — the highways themselves — is the celebration’s venue, opened with the auto industry on stage and framed around driving the country to mark its birthday.
