What happened
Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy delivered a keynote address at the American Association of Airport Executives’ (AAAE) Washington Legislative Conference, in the Department of Transportation’s upload of the event. The department’s description states the speech’s core: the department’s number one job is safety, and under his leadership the department is constantly looking for ways to make air travel safer — through new policy initiatives, investing in new technology, or utilizing AI — and Secretary Duffy also highlighted his plan to upgrade the air traffic control system, as the description states the themes.
In the address, Duffy argued the innovation case as he stated it: drones, electric vertical takeoff aircraft, and autonomous vehicles are remaking movement — the country loses roughly 41,000 people a year on its roads, as he stated the figure — and if the department does not write rules that let innovators develop, test, and manufacture that technology in America, they will go to countries that support it instead, as he put it. Against that excitement he set the department’s one critical role, as he stated it: safety — when the department fails, people die. He said past administrations had focused on green, social justice, or DEI priorities, and that for him those are not the focus; getting families to and from their destinations is, with the best and brightest in the system, as he stated his doctrine. He grounded it in the January 29 crash, in which 67 people lost their lives, as he stated the toll.
Why it matters
The AAAE keynote is Duffy’s doctrine speech to the airport industry two months into the job: safety named as the department’s single critical role, innovation rules as an industrial competition with other countries, and the air traffic control upgrade carried to the executives who run the airports it serves.
