What happened
President Donald Trump, joined by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, delivered remarks at the White House on Mar. 21, 2025, carried on the White House channel, announcing that the Air Force would move forward with the world’s first sixth-generation fighter jet, to be known as the F-47. After a rigorous competition among top aerospace companies, the President said, the Air Force would award the Next Generation Air Dominance contract to Boeing. He called the F-47 the most advanced, most capable, most lethal aircraft ever built and said an experimental version had secretly been flying for a long period of time, as he stated it.
The President also used the remarks to detail follow-on moves from the previous day’s education order: the Small Business Administration under Kelly Loeffler would take over the student loan portfolio from the Department of Education immediately, and Health and Human Services under Secretary Kennedy would handle special needs and nutrition programs, as he announced them.
Why it matters
The F-47 announcement names the sixth-generation fighter program and its contractor on the record, and the same remarks assign two of the Education Department’s largest functions - student loans to the SBA and special-needs and nutrition programs to HHS - as the department’s elimination proceeds.
