What happened

President Donald Trump took questions from reporters as he departed the White House on October 10, 2026, in a gaggle carried in full on the White House channel. He said he was heading to Tennessee to campaign for Republican candidates, including Senator Bill Hagerty, and described the economy in superlative terms.

The longest exchange concerned the Russia diesel arrangement. Against critics who say it could prolong the war in Ukraine, the President said the administration had told President Zelensky not to strike refineries because diesel is a world supply problem: Russia supplies a large portion of the world’s diesel, he said, and Zelensky “goes and hits the diesel fuel” anyway. He repeated that the war should never have started and said “it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president.”

Asked whether he was committed to accepting the midterm results no matter which party wins, the President answered, “Of course I will,” adding: “But we don’t want cheating. We don’t want cheating in the midterm.”

Why it matters

Departure and arrival gaggles are where this President most often states his positions in his own words, outside a prepared text. Foreign policy is the portfolio of Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Marco Rubio and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, whose records this site tracks against statements like these.
