What happened

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials held a press conference on what the department called the dangerous consequences of sanctuary city policies, in the Department of Homeland Security’s upload of the October 9, 2026 event.

Mullin opened by saying the department wanted the public to have the facts of an incident that had taken place the previous day in New York, and brought ICE official Marcos Charles forward to give the background on the individual involved, as Mullin introduced him. Mullin argued, as he stated it, that sanctuary politicians create the conditions for such incidents, and closed by saying he would never apologize for the department’s men and women doing their jobs and thanking the President for the opportunity to lead the department, as he put it.

Why it matters

The October 9 press conference is the sanctuary-city argument in its standing form under Mullin: a specific New York case presented by ICE leadership, with the Secretary framing local non-cooperation policies — not the department’s enforcement — as the source of the danger, the same case he carried to Omaha and Ohio in the events paged alongside this one.
