What happened
Vice President JD Vance held a press conference at the White House on October 8, 2026, carried in full on the White House channel, announcing actions against fraud in the H-1B and J-1 visa programs. “This is a great day for American workers because we are taking some very concrete actions to cut down on some of the H-1B and J1 visa fraud that we’ve been tracking over the past several months,” Vance said.
Vance described the H-1B program as meant for positions “completely impossible to fill with American workers” and said it had become, in his account, rife with fraud — including, as he described the scheme, companies placing token advertisements and claiming no American applied. He was joined by officials including Attorney General Todd Blanche and Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling; Vance credited Sonderling’s department with uncovering, as he put it, about $20 billion in fraud and securing over 200 convictions in the last five months.
Labor Inspector General Anthony D’Esposito announced a visa fraud strike team bringing together investigative expertise from across government, and a Labor Inspector General most-wanted fraudster list featuring, as he described it, 16 criminals who have stolen nearly half a billion dollars from Americans. He put the task force’s results to date at 171 indictments, 203 convictions, 80 arrests, more than 70 search warrants, and over a billion dollars identified for taxpayers — all figures as stated by the officials at the podium.
Why it matters
Vance chairs the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud — the same task force behind the October 20 fraud whistleblower announcement this site has paged — and visa fraud is where its enforcement arm meets the Labor Department’s inspector general. Sonderling’s role here is part of the record of his first weeks as Labor Secretary, following his September 30, 2026 confirmation.
Scoreboard watch
This is a candidate item for the weekly scoreboard: a named enforcement mechanism (the visa fraud strike team) launched by the fraud task force, with dated, checkable claims — indictments, convictions, and dollars identified — that the scoreboard can test as the record develops. Flagged for Thomas’s review; the scoreboard entry itself remains review-gated.
