What happened

President Donald Trump took questions from reporters as he departed the White House on October 7, 2026, in a gaggle carried on the White House channel, much of it about his campaign travel. He said his Texas rallies were running “almost one a day” with lines “a mile long or two miles long,” and explained the focus plainly: “We want to make sure that Ken Paxton wins. He’s a good man. He was probably the best attorney general in the whole country or right up there.”

Asked what mortgage rates above 7 percent were doing to the housing market, he said, “Well, it hurts housing, but the rates are going to come down when the oil comes down. The oil comes down as soon as we finish off with Iran and that’s going to be very quickly.” He described Iran as “in desperate condition,” said its nuclear capability had been taken away — “we’ve done what other presidents should have done for many years” — and said its military was “now wiped out.” He rejected reports that he supports a change of government in Poland (“I love the people in Poland and the president. He’s a big friend of mine”), welcomed Turkish and Pakistani forces deploying to help Saudi Arabia (“they want to help Saudi Arabia and I think that’s good”), and cited $21 trillion in investment and falling crime among his closing claims.

Why it matters

Housing costs run through HUD Secretary Scott Turner’s portfolio and the Federal Reserve’s rate path under Chair Kevin Warsh; the President’s answer here ties both, in his own words, to the war’s end rather than to either institution. The Texas travel is the midterm campaign’s closing-month map, tracked on this site into November 3, 2026.
