What happened
President Donald Trump delivered remarks in Baltimore, Maryland on October 6, 2026, in an event carried on the White House channel focused on the Navy’s submarine industrial base. Anduril Industries co-founder and chief executive Brian Schimpf opened the program, arguing that meeting the Navy’s requirements for Virginia-class attack submarines will demand substantially more production capacity than existing shipyards and suppliers can provide.
Schimpf said the Navy began a conversation with Anduril more than two years ago about whether the company could assist the submarine enterprise in a larger way, and that the country’s need for more places where submarine components can be built had become clearer the longer the company studied the industrial-base challenge.
Why it matters
Submarine production is a pacing item in the administration’s defense buildup under Secretary of War Pete Hegseth: the United States builds, in Schimpf’s words, the most capable nuclear-powered submarines in the world, but demand on the shipyards has outgrown capacity. A presidential appearance built around a defense-technology company joining the submarine enterprise is the administration’s industrial-base answer presented in public — new entrants, more production sites, faster build rates.
