What happened

Energy Secretary Chris Wright announced nuclear power investments in Ohio at Vistra’s Perry Nuclear Power Plant, in the Department of Energy’s upload of the October 5, 2026 event. The department announced a conditional loan commitment of up to $4.2 billion, through its Office of Energy Dominance Financing, to finance upgrades and modernization at three Vistra nuclear plants: Perry and Davis-Besse in Ohio and Beaver Valley in Pennsylvania.

The projects are expected to add 433 megawatts of nuclear capacity, preserve nearly 4 gigawatts of existing baseload power — enough, the department said, to supply more than 3 million homes — and support the plants’ operation for an additional 20 years beyond their existing licenses, according to the Department of Energy. At Perry, speakers said the upgrades will add more than 200 megawatts of continuous capacity and support about 3,000 project-related jobs. “By getting more power out of the nuclear plants we already have, we can deliver more affordable, reliable, around-the-clock energy for American families and businesses,” Wright said.

Why it matters

Uprates are the fastest megawatts in the administration’s nuclear program: no new reactor to license or build, just more power from plants already on the grid — and, under this loan, two more decades of operating life for three of them.
