What happened
Vice President JD Vance delivered remarks at a shipbuilding facility groundbreaking in Brownsville, Texas, declaring that “American ship building is back in a very big way.” He framed the facility as a matter of both jobs and warfighting: service members, he said, should go to war with “the best tools,” and “those tools to be made by his fellow citizens.” He put the facility’s footprint at 10,000 jobs — “10,000 families have a good paycheck” — and cited the day’s jobs report, saying 90,000 jobs were created against an expected 35,000.
The Vice President thanked OMB Director Russell Vought, who was present (“who makes a lot of this stuff possible”), and Texas Governor Greg Abbott, crediting Abbott’s partnership for making the facility possible.
Why it matters
Shipbuilding is the defense-industrial edge of the administration’s manufacturing program: rebuilding domestic yards is both an Economy-hub jobs story and a readiness story for the Department of War. OMB Director Vought’s presence ties the project to the budget office that funds the industrial-base build-out this site tracks.
Scoreboard watch
This is a candidate item for the weekly scoreboard: a named facility with a stated jobs figure. What the scoreboard will check as the record develops is the facility’s build-out and hiring against the 10,000-job figure given at the groundbreaking.
