What happened
President Donald Trump announced what he called one of the largest energy infrastructure investments in American history, saying the Republic of Korea will invest up to $200 billion under the agreements his administration has secured: a six-gigawatt power generation facility in Texas, eight new large-scale nuclear power plants, and the Alaska liquefied natural gas pipeline, which he said will deliver nearly 4 billion cubic feet of LNG per day. He tied the package to the U.S.–South Korea trade agreement, under which, he said, Korean tariffs were reduced to 15% in exchange for investment commitments.
The President was joined by Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan, Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy, and executives from Westinghouse, NextEra, Related, Lewis Energy, and Glenfarne. He opened the event by announcing the completion of the U.S. departure from Iraq after 23 years, saying American forces took “every nut, every bolt, every screw” with them.
Why it matters
The package sits at the center of the administration’s energy-dominance program: Interior and the National Energy Council under Secretary Burgum, generation and nuclear build-out under Secretary Wright at Energy, and the trade-deal investment model run by Secretary Lutnick at Commerce — the portfolios this site tracks under the Energy & Permitting hub.
Scoreboard watch
This is a candidate item for the weekly scoreboard: a named, funded investment announcement. What the scoreboard will check as the record develops is construction — the Texas plant, the reactor projects, and the Alaska pipeline — against the figures announced at the podium.
