What happened
EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin represented the United States at the G20 Energy Abundance Ministerial in Houston, Texas, and reported on it in a statement the EPA released on September 29, 2026. Zeldin noted, as he stated it, that the last time the United States hosted a G20 was in 2009, and that some of the most significant changes since then revolve around how energy is generated and consumed. Americans need “durable, reliable, affordable base load power,” as he put it.
Zeldin characterized the administration’s announcement at the G20 as, in his words, “the largest power sector deregulatory action in United States history,” at over $300 billion with that week’s announcement, as he stated the figure. He said the United States was able to get outcome statements on water reuse as well as permitting and regulatory reform, and closed by calling it an honor for the United States to host the countries in Houston, “the energy capital of the world,” as he put it. The EPA’s description adds that unleashing energy dominance, advancing water reuse and permitting reform, and ramping up reliable baseload power were among the ways the administration led progress at the ministerial.
Why it matters
The statement is Zeldin’s own summary of the EPA’s international energy posture in the administration’s second year: the domestic power-sector deregulation program presented to the G20 as the U.S. model, with water-reuse and permitting-reform language carried into the ministerial’s outcome statements, as he reported them.
