What happened

Vice President JD Vance sat down with Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia — the administration’s chief design officer — for a fireside chat at the America.gov launch event, introduced as a conversation about fraud. Recapping the President’s private meeting with technology leaders earlier that day, Vance argued the answer to AI risk is builder responsibility, not a new regulator: companies that build harmful or defective products, he said, already answer to the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice under existing law, the way a pharmaceutical company answers for an unsafe drug.

He rejected proposals for “an FDA or an FAA for new frontier models,” arguing regulators know less than the builders and that a new regime “may make things worse if it’s not smart and careful.” He also praised the America.gov build itself as proof government software can be done well: “it is possible actually to build good software tools for the American people.”

Why it matters

Vance chairs the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, and the chat is his fullest statement of the administration’s regulatory philosophy in that role: enforce existing liability hard rather than build new regulatory structures. It is the doctrine behind the fraud program whose announcements this site tracks under the Fraud, Waste & Corruption hub.
