What happened
President Donald Trump spoke to reporters in the room after a White House meeting and luncheon with technology leaders, calling the session “very productive, extremely friendly” and the attendees “the most brilliant people probably in the world.” He announced the day’s signature move: “We’re going to be signing a document today at about 5:00 renaming artificial intelligence because it’s not artificial… we’re going to be renaming it super intelligence, officially.”
On regulation, he said the group favored “tremendous self-regulation,” with the Department of Justice and FBI as an automatic backstop, and he described an agreement that the companies will work with local communities hosting data centers — “supplying oil and gas… supplying education… helping teachers along financially” — so that host communities are “safe and happy.”
Why it matters
The pool remarks are the announcement of record for the administration’s AI rebranding and its self-regulation posture, made with the industry’s leaders in the room. The technology portfolio belongs to OSTP Director Michael Kratsios, whose record this site tracks under the Economy hub.
