What happened

President Donald Trump took questions from reporters outside the West Wing following his meeting with technology leaders, expanding on the day’s announcement that artificial intelligence is being officially renamed “super intelligence” — “SI.” He said the industry leaders and he signed an accord he described as “morally binding” and “almost like a constitution,” and argued the technology should not be slowed by guardrails: “a bad actor is going to get caught and that’s why we have the DOJ, that’s why we have the FBI, that’s why we have the CIA.”

Pressed on oversight, the President pointed to what he called “tremendous self-policing” by the companies and said the administration is “thinking about forming a committee of sorts” of about ten people from the industry group to watch over the enterprise. On data centers, he said the companies will be “very generous” to host communities, financially and otherwise, including help for schools and teachers.

Why it matters

The gaggle is the President’s fullest on-record defense of the administration’s technology posture: American firms keep the lead over China, self-regulation first, existing law-enforcement agencies as the backstop. It is the policy frame that OSTP Director Michael Kratsios’s office implements and that this site tracks under the Economy hub.
