What happened

President Donald Trump took questions from reporters as he departed the White House on September 27, 2026, en route to the Chicago area for the Presidents Cup, where he said the Ryder Cup-style event’s organizers had named him honorary chairman. He called it “one of the biggest events in golf by far.”

Before boarding, he ran through his economic record, saying the country has “the best employment numbers that came out in the history of our country,” the lowest poverty in its history, and the best per-person income numbers ever. He said oil prices will drop sharply once the war involving Iran ends, which he said would be soon, and that grocery prices have come “way down” from the prior administration’s levels, while oil is already less expensive than it was then. He also said the United States took a record amount of oil out of the Hormuz trade the previous night.

Why it matters

Short departure gaggles like this one carry the President’s headline economic claims in his own words. The employment, poverty, income, and energy-price figures he stated here are the kind of claims the Economy hub’s scoreboard exists to check against the published record as it develops.
