What happened

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump hosted President Xi Jinping of China and Madame Peng Liyuan at a White House state dinner, uploaded by the White House on September 25, 2026. President Trump framed the evening in the long history of the relationship, recalling that the first formal Chinese delegation reached the United States 158 years ago and attended the first China–United States state dinner at the White House. He said the two leaders “represent different systems, but the ties between our people endure and we’ve never gotten along better.”

Going off script, President Trump invited the guests to walk through to see the new White House ballroom under construction — “one year away from completion,” in a room that seats about 145 against the thousand-plus he said wanted to attend — calling the dinner guests the first people to step foot in it. He presented President Xi with a bald eagle artwork designed in collaboration with the First Lady, and closed with a toast to “a future of harmony, peace, and success.”

President Xi said the two presidents’ exchanged state visits within half a year made “history in our bilateral engagement,” that the day’s talks had reached “common understanding on many issues,” and that the two goals — China’s national rejuvenation and making America great again — “can surely be mutually reinforcing.” Noting the Mid-Autumn Festival, he proposed a toast to the friendship between the two peoples.

Why it matters

The dinner capped the reciprocal state-visit exchange that began with President Trump’s May 2026 visit to Beijing. The strategic-stability framework both presidents described — and the trade and security understandings they said the day produced — is the China record owned under this hub by Secretary Rubio, Secretary Bessent, and USTR Greer.
