What happened
President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed President Xi Jinping of China and Madame Peng Liyuan to the White House with a full arrival ceremony — both national anthems played — uploaded by the White House on September 24, 2026. President Trump said President Xi was “the first ever Chinese leader to make a second formal state visit to America,” recalled the May 2026 Beijing visit, and noted the two would visit the National Archives the next day to see the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights during America’s 250th anniversary year.
On substance, President Trump said the Board of Trade created during the Beijing visit “has been unbelievably successful,” pointed to new market access for American farmers and ranchers, and said the visit would take up “security, technology, and super intelligence, SI.” President Xi said the two sides had agreed in Beijing to build “a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability,” called for healthy, bounded competition — “a race of catching up with one another, not a wrestle” — and held the line of “no conflict and no confrontation.” He announced an invitation for 100,000 young Americans to visit China for exchanges and study over five years, and said two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, would arrive at Zoo Atlanta in a few days.
Why it matters
This ceremony opened the Washington half of the 2026 reciprocal state visits and stated both governments’ framework in public: trade machinery and farm access on the U.S. side, stability and non-confrontation on the Chinese side. The follow-through — market access, flights, counternarcotics, and the AI questions both leaders named — belongs to the trade and foreign-policy teams this hub tracks.
Scoreboard watch
Two verifiable undertakings were stated at the podium: the Board of Trade’s farm and ranch market access, and President Xi’s 100,000-student exchange invitation. Both are candidates for the scoreboard’s evidence log as the record develops.
