What happened

Vice President JD Vance held a press conference on September 22, 2026, announcing new actions by the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, which he said is led with Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz, and Andrew Ferguson. The headline figure: “We are announcing $2.2 billion in American taxpayer money that we’re saving” by verifying that people receiving Affordable Care Act subsidies are actually entitled to them.

Vance said the task force is stopping Obamacare enrollment for about 750,000 people it believes are fraudulently enrolled, and will run additional verification — legal-resident status and income thresholds — on about 419,000 more.
