What happened

President Donald Trump met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine in New York on September 22, 2026, on the margins of the General Assembly. President Trump said the two have “a very good relationship” and added: “the president and I are trying to figure out the solution and I think it’s going to happen. I really do.” President Zelenskyy thanked him for his personal and bipartisan support and said, “I hope that we will end this war… we needed to do as quick as possible before winter.”

Taking press questions alongside President Zelenskyy, President Trump declined to preview terms — “I think they’re going to make a deal, and I don’t want to say what the deal is” — acknowledged Ukrainian strikes on Russian refining as “a serious hit on the Russians” and on diesel prices, and said he has himself called for a temporary ban on diesel exports, asking Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who was present, to address feasibility; Bessent said the administration is examining whether a full or partial ban would work, with a decision in days. President Trump also said his team had held a “very productive” three-hour meeting with an Iranian delegation that day, described possible Patriot missile production in Ukraine as under discussion, and said both President Putin and President Zelenskyy “want to see the war ended.”

Why it matters

The bilateral is the President’s public status report on the Ukraine negotiation at the start of UN week: a deal predicted, terms withheld, and two live policy questions — a diesel export ban and Patriot production in Ukraine — placed on the record with the Treasury Secretary in the room. It belongs to the Ukraine record this hub tracks for Secretary Rubio and the President’s envoys.
