What happened

President Donald Trump held a bilateral meeting with the prime minister of the United Kingdom in New York on September 22, 2026, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, carried on the White House channel. The President congratulated the prime minister on his election win — “He had a great election win. That was a big one” — and said the two had talked about “everything from Rolls-Royce to energy to immigration. We covered a lot and we’re with them… we are with you all the way, Mr. Prime Minister.”

The prime minister said the two had touched on Ukraine and “the potential for progress there,” said Britain stood ready to help in the Middle East, including opening the strait, and agreed that “Iran must never be a nuclear power.” He also raised trade and the Falklands. Asked whether the prime minister was someone he could do business with, the President said, “I think he’s a natural business person… He gets it.”

On immigration, the President said the United States had recorded “18 months now in a row where nobody came in illegally into our country,” while the prime minister described Britain’s commitment to “a controlled approach” to migration and said small-boat crossings that summer were down about 50% on six years earlier. Asked about the cost-of-living pain allies were feeling from the Iran war, the President said prices would come down once the wars ended because “oil is the big thing,” and repeated that Iran could not be allowed a nuclear weapon.

Why it matters

Britain is the closest U.S. ally in the portfolio of Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Marco Rubio, and this meeting is the bilateral record of that relationship at the UN: alignment stated on Iran and Ukraine, and immigration — a signature domestic issue on both sides of the Atlantic — discussed leader to leader.
