What happened

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin held an Angel Family event in Omaha, Nebraska, in the Department of Homeland Security’s upload published September 18, 2026, built around the family of Sarah, an Omaha-area woman killed on January 31, 2016, when her car was rear-ended by a driver the family identified on the recording as Eswin Mejia, who they said was driving at more than 70 miles an hour with a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit, posted a $5,000 bond, and fled the country.

Sarah’s mother recounted the family’s nine-year wait, thanked Mullin and the administration, and credited Senators Ernst, Grassley, and Fischer with carrying Sarah’s Law — passed, as she stated it, as an amendment in the Laken Riley Act in January 2025. A Homeland Security Investigations assistant special agent in charge for Iowa and Nebraska then walked through the investigation that located Mejia abroad and returned him to the United States for sentencing, as the agent described it. Mullin closed by contrasting Nebraska’s participation in the 287(g) program with sanctuary jurisdictions that do not cooperate with Homeland Security, arguing, as he stated it, that non-cooperation endangers people in Nebraska and every other state a released offender might flee to.

Why it matters

The Omaha event is the human case behind two of the administration’s signature enforcement laws — the Laken Riley Act and the Sarah’s Law amendment it carries — presented by the department in the family’s home community, with the Secretary tying the family’s story directly to the 287(g) cooperation model he was promoting across the Midwest that month.
