What happened
President Donald Trump met the Taoiseach of Ireland for a bilateral meeting in Dublin on September 12, 2026, carried on the White House channel. The Taoiseach opened by marking the 25th anniversary of 9/11 — Ireland held a national day of mourning in its aftermath, and over a thousand of the victims were of Irish heritage — and thanked the President for keeping his promise, made 12 months earlier, to attend the Irish Open at Doonbeg. He put numbers on the relationship: Irish companies employ over 200,000 Americans, American companies in Ireland employ about 245,000 Irish people with access to the European and Asian markets, and the Doonbeg investment employs 350 people in West Clare.
The President answered that the two countries’ relationship “has never been as good as it is right now,” said they had had “some discussions on trade and various other things,” and looked ahead to the Taoiseach’s full day at the Irish Open. In the question period he dated the Iran war’s end — “I think very soon. I think it’ll be probably right after midterms. They’re trying to hold out as long as they can to complicate the election” — and repeated his core claim: “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon… they were two weeks away from having a nuclear weapon.”
Why it matters
The Dublin bilateral is the state-visit centerpiece of the Ireland trip: a European leader publicly quantifying the two-way jobs relationship on camera while the President uses the same session to restate his Iran timeline for the record.
