What happened
Acting Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling delivered remarks at the Department of Labor on September 11, 2026, for the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, in the department’s official upload. He framed the department’s observance around the American workers who lost their lives that day — “there’s no greater example of the courage, strength, and selflessness of the American worker that was displayed on September 11th,” as he put it — remembering those who went to work that morning and never came home, those who ran toward danger, and those who helped the nation recover and rebuild.
Sonderling named, as he stated them: the 658 employees of Cantor Fitzgerald killed at the World Trade Center; members of IBEW Local 3 and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners who were on the job that morning; the civilian and military personnel at the Pentagon; and the passengers and crew of Flight 93. He recounted the department’s own part — more than 1,000 OSHA personnel from across the country working around the clock at Ground Zero, monitoring air, identifying and correcting hazards, and distributing thousands of respirators, as he stated it — and directed every DOL employee, as a work assignment in his words, to read OSHA’s account, “Inside the Green Line.” The observance dedicated a tree at the department to the American workers of 9/11, as a permanent reminder, as he described it.
Why it matters
The address is the Labor Department’s official 25th-anniversary observance, and it states the department’s institutional memory of 9/11 in its own terms: the workers lost, the rescue and recovery workforce, and OSHA’s Ground Zero role — the record Sonderling told his own workforce to learn.
