What happened
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, and local law enforcement representatives hosted a roundtable in Ohio, in the Department of Homeland Security’s upload of the September 4, 2026 event, to highlight the importance of the department’s 287(g) partnerships and how state and local law enforcement helped ICE deliver what the department called a record-breaking number of arrests in August 2026, as the department described the event; Secretary Mullin took questions from the press afterward.
Opening the session, Mullin credited the President’s leadership, as he stated it, for crime numbers he cited at the table — kidnapping, murder, and carjacking at the lowest levels since records began, with murder levels, as he put it, at a 126-year low. The local officers and sheriffs around the table described their agencies’ 287(g) work with ICE in their own jurisdictions, in the session’s working portion.
Why it matters
The Ohio roundtable is the cooperative model Mullin contrasts with sanctuary jurisdictions everywhere else: county sheriffs and local departments trained and partnered with ICE under 287(g), presented by the department as the mechanism behind its August 2026 arrest figures — the affirmative half of the sanctuary argument paged in the October 9 press conference.
