What happened

Vice President JD Vance briefed members of the media at the White House on September 3, 2026, leading with the fraud task force he chairs. “We have taken over 2,000 fraudulent CDL mills out of business,” he announced, saying the shutdowns of operations issuing fraudulent commercial driver’s licenses made America’s roads safer and protected American truckers’ jobs — “we’ve seen trucker wages go up by 7.5%.” He credited Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy’s department for facilitating the work, and put the task force’s wider finding at “north of 200 billion dollars in fraud.”

The second headline was energy. Vance described the Venezuela oil arrangement as creating “what is effectively a new 65 billion barrel of oil reserve for the United States of America”: American companies generating oil revenue in Venezuela, more supply reaching world markets, revenue for Venezuelans, and — under the deal he credited Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth with striking — royalty value flowing to the American people as well. He contrasted the arrangement with the prior administration’s drawdown of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which he said had left the reserve “extraordinarily low.”

Why it matters

Vance chairs the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, and this briefing is that task force reporting its own numbers on the record — CDL mills closed, wages moved, a fraud total claimed — alongside an energy deal whose structure (supply, royalties, reserve effect) the scoreboard can test against production and price data as they publish.

Scoreboard watch

This is a candidate item for the weekly scoreboard: dated claims with named figures — more than 2,000 fraudulent CDL mills closed, trucker wages up 7.5%, more than $200 billion in fraud found, and a Venezuela deal framed as a 65-billion-barrel reserve. The scoreboard will check each figure against the agencies’ published record.
