What happened

Energy Secretary Chris Wright delivered remarks at Miraflores Palace in Caracas, Venezuela, in the Department of Energy’s upload of the September 2, 2026 event. Wright called it “a historic day in the transformation of Venezuela” and said President Trump’s mission in Venezuela is “to bring peace, freedom, opportunity, and prosperity to the people of Venezuela.”

Wright said the deals signed that day represented tens of billions of dollars of investment and would ultimately make thousands of jobs, as he stated them. He thanked the companies taking part — naming Chevron and GE among them — for bringing capital and technology into the country, and said he had first come to Venezuela seven months earlier to meet President Rodríguez and her team about developing energy resources and knitting the two nations closer together. “The catalyst for transforming Venezuela is energy,” Wright said.

Why it matters

Caracas is the overseas end of Wright’s energy-abundance case: the administration is presenting American companies and American energy development as the instrument for rebuilding Venezuela’s economy and the U.S.–Venezuela relationship at the same time, at what Wright called “Trump speed.”
