What happened

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials held a press conference in New York City, in the Department of Homeland Security’s upload of the September 1, 2026 event, to announce the success of Operation Rotten Apple, which the department said resulted in over 2,100 arrests of illegal aliens in New York, and to highlight how cooperation between DHS and local law enforcement saves American lives and makes communities safer, as the department described the event; Mullin took questions from the media afterward.

Mullin opened by thanking the President for running on restoring law and order, and cited the crime figures he attributed to that leadership, as he stated them: only 2% of the population causing 80% of crime; homicides down 18% at 126-year lows; carjackings down 47%; motor vehicle theft down 20%; and robberies down 17% — arguing, as he put it, that the numbers came from allowing DHS, ICE, and CBP to do their jobs, even in sanctuary cities whose local politicians refuse to work with the department.

Why it matters

Operation Rotten Apple is the department’s New York proof case under Mullin: a four-figure arrest total announced in the country’s largest sanctuary city, used by the Secretary to argue that federal enforcement delivers safety whether or not city hall cooperates — the operational counterpart to the sanctuary-policy press conferences paged alongside this one.
