What happened

President Donald Trump welcomed the United States Olympic and Paralympic teams to the White House on August 6, 2026, honoring the athletes of the 2026 Winter Games in northern Italy. “Today, we’re truly honored to welcome to the White House perhaps the greatest group of Winter Olympians in American history,” he said. “At the 2026 Olympic Games, Team USA won more gold medals than any American Winter Olympic team has ever won before.”

His tally from the podium: nine bronze medals, 12 silver medals, and a record 12 Winter Olympic golds, plus an “incredible 13 Paralympic gold medals” — also a record, he said. He thanked the athletes, the Team USA coaches and staff, and the leadership of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, and singled out medalists in the room, including team figure skating gold medalist Danny O’Shea. “They did it for the highest privilege in all of sports, wearing the red, white, and blue while representing those three proud letters on their uniform. It’s called USA.”

Why it matters

Championship receptions are part of the ceremonial record this chronicle keeps: a record-setting Winter Games delegation — the most golds an American Winter Olympic team has ever won, on the President’s telling — received at the White House, with the medal counts stated on the record and checkable against the USOPC’s official tally.
