What happened

Vice President JD Vance convened a roundtable with members of Congress at the White House on August 5, 2026, to move the President’s fraud task force from an administrative effort to a legislative one. “We are here to kick off what has at this point been an informal effort, which is working with Congress to help us combat fraud,” he said, describing a whole-of-government approach run with colleagues at HHS, the Justice Department, and the other agencies.

Vance framed fraud as “really a dual victim crime”: the taxpayer, whose dollars are stolen, and the beneficiaries of programs that then lack the resources to work. He cited a Medicaid case — prosecuted with DOJ — in which a program meant to provide health care to new mothers and newborns was billed by people who “have not provided an ounce of service to a new mom or a young baby.” And he put the task force’s headline number on the record: working with Andrew Ferguson and Stephen Miller, “we have been able to identify $230 billion of fraud just since the fraud task force was set up. And that’s frankly by conservatively estimating it.” After the opening statements, the working conversation continued without the cameras.

Why it matters

This roundtable is the fraud task force’s pivot from executive action to legislation — the Vice President asking Congress to write the accountability and program-integrity systems into law. It sits in the direct line of the fraud record this chronicle tracks from the September and October 2026 task force press conferences, and its $230 billion identified-fraud figure is the largest the task force has claimed on the record to date.

Scoreboard watch

This is a candidate item for the weekly scoreboard: the $230 billion identified-fraud figure and the legislative package the roundtable was convened to advance. What the scoreboard will follow is the bills’ introduction and progress, and the task force’s documentation of the $230 billion figure.
