What happened

President Donald Trump spoke with reporters at Joint Base Andrews on July 19, 2026, the day of the FIFA World Cup Final. He called the tournament “incredible… four times greater than any FIFA ever held. And it’s probably about five times actually,” congratulated FIFA president Gianni Infantino and his staff, and said of the finalists, “I would say Spain played better, you know. But they both played well,” adding that he had spoken with Spain and congratulated them on their team.

On Iran, he said the United States had struck again that day: “We hit it very hard again today,” and, pressed on the campaign’s purpose, “What we’re doing now is we’re ending any chance that they could have a nuclear [capability].” He also raised Canadian wildfire smoke, saying of fires drifting into the United States, “you got to stop these fires from coming in and poisoning our air,” that businesses — in particular Michigan car plants, as he described them — had closed, and that Canada might “pay us for damages or something.”

Why it matters

The gaggle pairs the celebratory close of the home World Cup — the trophy ceremony from the same day is paged separately — with the administration’s running Iran account in the President’s own words, kept here on the Foreign Policy & Defense hub.

Scoreboard watch

Scoreboard watch: the “ending any chance” formulation is a dated statement of the Iran campaign’s stated objective, and the same-day strike claim is a checkable marker. Noted for the scoreboard editor; no entry is published from this page.
