What happened
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin delivered remarks on the administration’s election integrity efforts, in the Department of Homeland Security’s upload of July 17, 2026 — the department’s follow-on to the President’s update on election integrity, with Mullin discussing, as the department described the remarks, the Trump Administration’s efforts to secure American elections.
Mullin opened, as he stated it, with the President’s premise that election security is national security, and said securing elections is part of the Homeland Security secretary’s job. He said the department’s review was not about rehashing the 2020 election but about exposing what took place and making sure it never happens again, and argued the fixes should not be a partisan issue. Walking through the department’s work, Mullin said, as he stated the figures, that the SAVE program records had identified some 278,000 non-citizens and 400,000 deceased people in the records the department is now going through file by file — with a DHS team he credited to Heather Honey’s work and USCIS Director Joe Edlow’s agency — to identify each individual, determine whether they voted, and where. He also restated his support for the SAVE Act’s passage, as he put it, and criticized the injunctions he attributed to activist judges against the program, as he stated them.
Why it matters
The July 17 remarks make DHS the administration’s election-integrity enforcement arm in Mullin’s own telling: the department that runs immigration records presenting itself as the verifier of the voter rolls, with named figures — 278,000 non-citizens and 400,000 deceased records, as he stated them — that the weekly scoreboard can check against the department’s published SAVE program results.
