What happened
President Donald Trump delivered an address to the nation on the evening of July 16, 2026, devoted to the integrity of American elections. He opened with a review of his administration’s record as he stated it — inflation posting, he said, its largest monthly decline in more than six years; “zero illegal aliens being admitted to the United States in the past 14 months”; the murder rate at “its lowest level since 1900”; most-favored-nation drug pricing; and the Trump Accounts program for children.
The address’s central announcement was that he was ordering “the immediate declassification and release of critical intelligence” that he said reveals vulnerabilities in the election infrastructure. The President said the documents were gathered by a White House Government Transparency Task Force with staff of the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board, that intelligence agency chiefs had reviewed the findings, and that the documents could be read at whitehouse.gov. Of the release’s purpose he said: “Our purpose in disclosing this information is not to weaken confidence in election, but to earn that confidence by confronting vulnerabilities and correcting them.”
The first of what he described as five areas of concern was, in his account, a compromise of U.S. voter data by the People’s Republic of China beginning in the 2020 election cycle — “what is believed to be the largest compromise of election data in history, resulting in China’s illicit acquisition of 220 million US voter files,” covering, he said, tens of millions of voters in 18 states. A second set of documents, he said, showed intelligence officials suppressing and downplaying that information. He said his administration was notifying the states whose data was compromised, that the Secretary of Homeland Security would brief the next day on cyber vulnerabilities in electronic voting systems, and that he had ordered the Department of Homeland Security to notify every state about non-citizens on its voter rolls and direct their removal. He closed with an appeal for Congress to pass the Save America Act — the bill he described as requiring photo voter ID and proof of citizenship and restricting mail-in ballots — urging Americans to call their representatives and “demand that they pass the Save America Act without delay.” All of the address’s factual claims are the President’s, presented here as he made them.
Why it matters
This is the anchor document of the administration’s election-integrity campaign in the midterm year: a presidential address announcing a declassification, a state-notification process, and a legislative demand, all in one dated statement. This chronicle files it on the Elections & Governance hub with every claim attributed to the President, alongside the Save America Act record it asks Congress to complete.
Scoreboard watch
Scoreboard candidate: the declassification and release itself (a dated, checkable action), the ordered DHS state notifications on voter rolls, and the Save America Act passage demand restated as the administration’s central election ask. Flagged for the scoreboard editor; the entry itself stays review-gated.
