What happened
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt briefed members of the media at the White House on July 16, 2026. She opened with the evening’s schedule: at 9:00 p.m. Eastern, President Trump would deliver a major address to the nation on protecting the integrity of American elections — the address paged separately in this collection. She also announced that the President would travel to New York City on Friday for a FIFA reception at Trump Tower and attend Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.
On the economy, Leavitt said Tuesday’s CPI report showed inflation dropping 0.4% in the month, “the largest monthly decline in more than 6 years,” with prices falling for gasoline, electricity, non-prescription drugs, car insurance, medical care, and hotels, and real weekly earnings rising in June — private-sector real wages up, she said, by roughly $1,000 since President Trump took office. She noted Walmart and Sam’s Club price reductions on thousands of items. On Trump Accounts, she said the program is officially live and, citing a Council of Economic Advisers figure from that morning, that more than 6.5 million American children have been signed up; she restated the program’s terms as she described them — open to any child under 18, a $1,000 Treasury seed deposit for children born between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2028, up to $5,000 a year in family contributions, and up to $2,500 a year in employer contributions.
On the border, Leavitt said new Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection numbers confirm “that for the 14th straight month, this administration has released zero illegal aliens into the United States,” with Southwest border apprehensions down 94% compared with the same period under the previous administration, and she listed a series of ICE arrests from the preceding weekend.
Why it matters
The briefings are the administration’s daily on-record account of itself, and this one is the same-day runway to the President’s election-integrity address — the scheduling, economic, and border claims the White House put on the record hours before he spoke. It falls inside Leavitt’s tenure at the podium; she departed the role on August 27, 2026.
Scoreboard watch
Scoreboard watch: the Trump Accounts figure (more than 6.5 million children signed up, per the Council of Economic Advisers as cited by the Press Secretary) and the 14th-straight-month zero-releases border claim are dated, checkable markers for the promise record. Noted for the scoreboard editor; no entry is published from this page.
