What happened

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin used the agency’s “Engines & Innovation” program at the Great American State Fair on the National Mall on July 9, 2026 to announce proposed fixes to the previous administration’s heavy-duty truck and engine standards for model year 2027, according to the EPA’s upload of the event. The program, introduced by Assistant Administrator Aaron Szabo, also previewed the Freedom 250 Grand Prix scheduled around the National Mall on August 22–23 and featured a motorsports panel with six-time INDYCAR champion Scott Dixon and Penske Corporation’s Bud Denker, as the event record shows.

On the truck rule, Zeldin stated that the proposal is estimated to save American truckers $12 billion — up to $6,000 per vehicle on a new truck — and that part of the savings comes from scaling back a warranty requirement in the prior rule, as he described it. He framed the step in a sequence he laid out from the stage: the February finalization of the repeal of the 2009 endangerment finding, which he stated saves Americans approximately $2,400 per new vehicle, and the President’s signing of three Congressional Review Act measures to end electric-vehicle mandates, as he stated them. A panel of four trucking-industry leaders discussed the announcement with the Administrator, as the upload shows.

Why it matters

The model-year 2027 truck standards are one of the largest vehicle rules the Zeldin EPA inherited, and this proposal is the Administrator’s stated move to rewrite them — with the savings figures he put on the record at the fair now the numbers the proposal will be judged against as it moves through public comment.
