What happened

In a short White House video released July 3, 2026, President Donald Trump sat with Second Lady Usha Vance in the Oval Office for a storytime reading from a children’s book about the presidents and their pastimes, on the eve of the 250th anniversary of independence. “The 4th of July is a fantastic day. It’s a day of celebration,” the President said. “And it’s a 250th year anniversary on top of everything, which is just wonderful, isn’t it?”

The two traded notes from the book — President Clinton’s jogging track at the White House, President Lincoln’s horseback riding, President Kennedy, President Carter as a tennis player, President Obama’s basketball and golf — and the President joked that he would make it “mandatory” for his 11 grandchildren to watch him read the story. He noted the Oval Office “basically represents the president and it’s never been used for such a purpose,” and praised Vice President JD Vance: “Your husband’s been a great vice president… we’ve had a lot of fun working together, even in times of great stress because the world is under stress, but we’re solving a lot of the problems.”

Why it matters

The reading is the lightest entry in this chronicle’s America 250 week, and a deliberate one: the President and the Second Lady presenting the presidency itself to children, in the Oval Office, as the Semiquincentennial opened. This chronicle files it on the Education hub, where the administration’s school-age civic programming is tracked.
