What happened

At a private ceremony inside the new Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota on July 1, 2026, President Donald Trump presented the library with Theodore Roosevelt’s own Medal of Honor. Medal of Honor recipient Britt Slabinski, president of the National Medal of Honor Society, noted that Theodore Roosevelt and his son Theodore Roosevelt Jr. are one of only two father-son pairs to receive the Medal of Honor, and that the two medals had never been together.

“It was in the Roosevelt Room for many, many years,” the President said. “When I heard about this, I said maybe we’ll think about it. Then I saw what you did — what a magnificent library you built… and I said, let’s take it from the Roosevelt Room.” He congratulated Interior Secretary Doug Burgum — “a spectacular Secretary of the Interior, to put it mildly” — and the two then cut the library’s ribbon together to a countdown from the audience, ahead of the President’s keynote address at the amphitheater, paged separately in this collection.

Why it matters

The medal’s move is the opening’s tangible act: the White House’s own Roosevelt relic transferred to the new library-museum in the Badlands town that shaped Roosevelt, carried out by a sitting president with his Interior Secretary.
