What happened
President Donald Trump delivered the keynote address at the opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota on July 1, 2026. “Today we come to the heartland of America to pay tribute to a man who embodied the heart and soul and fight and spirit of our country as much as anyone who ever lived,” he said. “President Theodore Roosevelt… he was quite something.” Speaking beneath “the wide open sky of the Badlands” — on what he noted was the inaugural flight of the new Air Force One, and, he joked, with two teleprompters not working — he dedicated “a living monument to a legend, a statesman, a soldier, frontiersman, and a true American hero.”
“Today, 107 years after he passed into eternity, Theodore Roosevelt’s presidential library opens its doors and the small town, but very great town, of Medora opens its arms to the entire world,” the President said, thanking the thousands who built the project and the man who put its first funding in place. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum traveled with the President for the opening, which is paged in its Medal of Honor and ribbon-cutting moments separately in this collection.
Why it matters
A sitting president keynoting the opening of a predecessor’s presidential library is a rare civic marker, and this one opens the administration’s America 250 week: Roosevelt — the conservationist president whose North Dakota years, he said, shaped him — as the chosen exemplar, in the Rough Rider State, three days before the 250th.
