What happened

Energy Secretary Chris Wright delivered remarks by video to the ARC conference, in the Department of Energy’s upload of the June 26, 2026 appearance, recalling that he had attended the first ARC gathering in person. “Energy is life,” Wright said, arguing that the transformation of the modern world — global life expectancy rising from 30 years to over 70 — was driven above all by the expansion of available energy, and that energy is both the economy and national security.

Wright said President Trump directed him to grow American energy production, drive down U.S. energy prices, and become energy dominant — which, he said, does not mean dominating everyone, but growing production so the United States can reindustrialize, lower prices at home, and export the surplus to friends and allies so they can cut dependence on hostile or unreliable suppliers, as he defined it. He criticized the United Kingdom and Germany by name, arguing — as his attributed position — that their policies had deindustrialized their nations without meaningfully reducing global emissions, and cited roughly 60,000 additional European deaths in the first winter after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which he attributed to dependence on Russian gas and the heating prices that followed, as public health data he cited presented it.

Why it matters

The ARC remarks are Wright’s philosophy delivered whole to a friendly transatlantic audience: energy abundance as the administration’s theory of prosperity and security, with Europe’s energy choices held up — in his telling — as the cautionary counterexample.
