What happened

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller took reporters’ questions on June 25, 2026, in PBS NewsHour’s recording, in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling affecting Temporary Protected Status holders. On birthright citizenship, whose case he described as still before the Court, he said: “This country doesn’t have a future if we don’t end birthright citizenship… The right and correct way to end birthright citizenship is for the Supreme Court to rule what the 14th Amendment clearly and correctly means. But one way or another, this nation has to end birthright citizenship.”

On asylum, he stated the administration’s position as a completed fact: “We’ve implemented international agreements all over the world to take in our asylum seekers. So America’s doors are closed fully to asylum seekers.” Ending illegal immigration, he argued, is “the most humanitarian thing that we can do,” describing cartel smuggling — the fees paid, the debts owed on arrival, and the profits funding kidnapping, trafficking and fentanyl — as he characterized the system. He credited the enforcement record with “13 — I believe is the correct number — consecutive months, maybe it’s actually 14 now,” with “not a single person released across the southern border,” as he stated the figure. On the TPS ruling’s consequences for Haitian holders, he said the expectation is straightforward: “If you no longer have status in this country, then you’re supposed to be deported,” and he rejected high-crime pockets in Haiti as a basis for asylum, comparing them to neighborhoods in Chicago, St. Louis and Los Angeles, as he argued the point. He also pointed, as recent measures, to an executive order to debank illegal aliens, continuing ICE budget reforms, and new enforcement funding passed through reconciliation, all as he stated them.

Why it matters

Miller is the architect of the administration’s immigration policy, and this exchange is his post-ruling statement of its end-state: asylum closed by agreement rather than by adjudication, birthright citizenship to be ended “one way or another,” and loss of status answered with deportation. Each element is a dated, checkable claim, made by the official who owns the file.

Scoreboard watch

Scoreboard watch: Miller’s June 25, 2026 claims as he stated them — asylum doors “closed fully” via international agreements; 13-to-14 consecutive months with zero releases across the southern border; deportation as the stated expectation for those who lose TPS status.
